Caffè all'Arancia - Serves 4:
2 cups of boiling coffee, 1 tsp. ground orange peel, 4 shots of Cognac, whipped cream to top. Mix the coffee with the sugar, orange peel and Cognac. Pour into cups and top with whipped cream and a strip of peel.
Caffè Profumatissimo - Serves 4:
4 cups of very strong coffee, 1T. sugar, a few mint leaves, whole cloves. Prepare the coffee, add sugar and set aside. Pour cooled coffee into a carafe with ice cubes. Add a few cloves and several mint leaves.
Caffè Imperiale - Serves 4:
1 very strong cup of coffee, 4 egg yolks, 4T. sugar, 1 Cup milk, 3 shots brandy. .Beat the egg yolks well, stirring in the sugar and brandy. Add to heated milk and coffee. Serve in heated punch cups.
Italian Coffee Vocabulary List
- caffè (espresso)—a small cup of very strong coffee, i.e., espresso
- caffè Americano—American-style coffee, but stronger; weaker than espresso and served in a large cup
- caffè corretto—coffee "corrected" with a shot of grappa, cognac, or other spirit
- caffè doppio—double espresso
- caffè Hag—decaffeinated coffee
- caffè macchiato—espresso "stained" with a drop of steamed milk: small version of a cappuccino
- caffè marocchino—espresso with a dash of hot milk and cacao powder
- caffè stretto—espresso with less water; rocket fuel!
- granita di caffè con panna—frozen, iced beverage (similar to a slush, but ice shavings make it authentic) and topped with whipped cream
- Ristretto: (short or shrunk) More concentrated espresso - made using the same amount of coffee but less water, by shortening extraction time. Tip: Just use the coffee that is yellow (crema) when it pours out of the machine. It´s the best tasting.
- Lungo: (long) Espresso made with more water than usual.
